It is not a particular emotional condition that you have to achieve. It is an orientation toward living with openness, compassion, receptivity, discernment, and attentiveness.

At times, this openness appears naturally. You sit beside somebody you love without needing anything from them. You listen to music, watch the ocean, look at the night sky, or simply rest for a while and feel no urgency to make the moment other than what it is. Nothing extraordinary has happened, yet there is a sense of completeness that does not depend on obtaining more.

These moments point toward an important part of Swami Chetanananda’s teaching of the open heart. Love is not limited to affection between people. The heart represents a relationship with life in which receiving, achieving, possessing, and controlling are no longer the only places from which fulfillment is sought. This becomes especially meaningful when you look at the many places where happiness is often expected to arrive.

When Happiness Seems to Be Somewhere Else

A loving relationship, meaningful work, financial comfort, creativity, companionship, achievement, and beautiful surroundings all have value. They enrich life, and there is no need to dismiss the pleasure or satisfaction they bring.

Yet life also shows how naturally the mind looks ahead. A goal is fulfilled and another comes into view. A relationship you once hoped for is here, and thoughts turn toward its future. Greater financial security brings relief, while attention eventually shifts toward another concern. This does not make desire wrong. It simply reveals how easily happiness can be linked to what is expected to happen next.

When external conditions no longer carry responsibility for making you complete, they are free to be appreciated for what they truly bring. A relationship brings affection and companionship without having to prove your worth. Achievement brings satisfaction without defining you. These movements often appear in ordinary thought. You see somebody else succeed and compare their path with yours. Someone responds in an unexpected manner and the mind begins interpreting what it means. An achievement is followed quickly by thoughts of the next goal.

There is no need to criticize these mental patterns or fight against them. The important distinction is that a thought does not have to determine your reaction. Comparison does not define your value, fear does not have to direct your choice, and desire does not need to turn into a demand.

Selected teachings of Matthew J. Brownstein describe this through the Observer. From this perspective, thoughts, sensations, and emotions are observed as movements through mind and body, without being identified with as who you are. True Self remains unchanged while these inner events arise and pass. That space between observing and responding brings you closer to the present moment, and the breath offers a simple place to begin.

The Breath, Stillness, and Emotion

The breath is always happening now. Memory draws the mind toward the past, anticipation carries it toward the future, while each inhalation and exhalation takes place in the present moment. This relates closely to Chetanananda’s broader teachings, where conscious breathing, creative energy, and the release of tension support a freer inner flow. In this sense, breathing is not merely a physical function. It offers a simple point of contact with what is taking place here and now.

Bringing attention to breathing does not require forcing a particular rhythm. As you remain with its gentle motion, the body often begins to settle. The shoulders soften, the jaw releases, and mental urgency loses some of its intensity. Nothing outside you has necessarily shifted, yet there is more inner space to observe what is happening without being completely absorbed by thought. From that calmer state, stillness is easier to sense, and what you are feeling can come forward without immediately taking over your response.

In that stillness, emotions have room to follow their own course. Anger can reveal that a boundary has been crossed, sadness can accompany loss, fear can arise with uncertainty, and grief can reflect the love associated with what is no longer physically here. None of these feelings means that the heart is closed. Remaining present as emotion passes through mind and body creates space between what is felt and what you choose to do with it. Anger can be felt without letting the first reaction determine how you respond to someone else, fear does not have to direct a decision, and sadness does not define who you are. From this steadier relationship with what is felt, letting go begins to unfold in a more practical and meaningful manner.

Letting Go and Surrender

Letting go does not mean caring less, becoming indifferent, or walking away from what matters. You can work wholeheartedly toward a goal without making your peace entirely depend on the result. You can grieve an ending while accepting that the ending occurred. What you value continues to have importance, but love no longer has to take the form of possession or control. As the need to hold life to one particular outcome begins to soften, letting go opens naturally into surrender.

Surrender is the willingness to stop resisting what is already here, not as resignation or approval, but as acceptance of the present moment. In this sense, surrender and acceptance bring you back to the present moment, where choice still remains.

From here, you decide whether to speak, establish a boundary, stay, leave, begin again, or take another direction. You can know what you believe without requiring someone else to see everything in the same manner. A disagreement does not require hatred, and understanding another point of view does not mean abandoning your own discernment. From this steadier place, forgiveness can arise not as agreement with what happened, but as release.

Forgiveness does not mean forgetting what occurred, approving behavior that brought pain, removing a necessary boundary, or returning to a relationship that is no longer beneficial. It means releasing the emotional influence of what came before, so the past does not need to occupy the same place in the life you are living now. What happened can remain part of your history without resentment continuing to shape the present.

That release can also include the way you look at choices you made earlier in life. The inner resources, perspective, and understanding available to you now were not necessarily accessible in the same way at that time. You can see what you would choose today without using your present insight to condemn decisions made during another period of your life. In this way, forgiveness includes not only how you relate to others, but also how you regard your own past.

When you no longer define yourself by a past choice, it also becomes easier to see that others cannot be limited to a single action, disagreement, or role. A painful moment may still matter, and discernment might guide the boundaries you choose, yet the whole of someone’s life is larger than one event. From this broader perspective, Chetanananda’s teaching of interrelatedness begins to carry a more personal meaning. You and everybody around you are spiritual beings having a human experience, each moving through individual histories, perceptions, hopes, losses, relationships, and choices. Seeing life in this manner does not erase individuality, boundaries, or discernment. It simply widens the viewpoint beyond one chapter, so neither you nor anybody else is defined by what happened at a particular moment.

As this perspective expands, the heart begins to meet life through more than judgment, comparison, or analysis. You can still discern what is beneficial, remember what occurred, and make conscious choices, while also sensing that there is more to yourself and others than what the mind can explain through a single story. This is where Chetanananda’s teaching of the logic of the heart finds its place, pointing toward a form of knowing that works alongside the mind and brings another dimension to how you understand yourself, others, and life.

The Logic of the Heart

The mind analyzes, plans, remembers, compares, and evaluates, and these abilities are valuable. Yet not everything meaningful is known through analysis alone. You know that you love somebody before you can explain every reason. Beauty touches you before you describe it. Compassion arises before thought has finished evaluating the situation.

The logic of the heart points toward this quieter form of knowing. It does not replace the mind or diminish discernment. Instead, it complements analytical thought with a form of a deep understanding that is sometimes sensed before it can be fully explained. In this way, the heart and mind do not need to oppose one another. Each has its place in how you meet yourself, others, and life.

True Self and Living from Love

After exploring the mind, the Observer, stillness, emotion, surrender, forgiveness, and interrelatedness, the spiritual meaning of True Self has a natural place.

True Self points toward what is not altered by the continual activity of thought or by the emotions and events passing through life. Love, peace, joy, happiness, wholeness, oneness, stillness, completeness, and pure presence are different expressions pointing toward this same essence.

From this perception, opening your heart is not a process of creating love or becoming more worthy of it. It is living with less interference from everything that says love, peace, or happiness must first be earned, obtained, controlled, or received from somewhere else. This understanding enters ordinary life through simple choices. You listen without immediately preparing a defense. You establish a boundary without hatred. You care without possession. You forgive without denying what happened. You receive what is beautiful without trying to guarantee its future, and you remain present when life does not give you every answer.

Opening your heart to love therefore does not take you away from everyday life. It brings you more intimately into it, with love and discernment together, with greater receptivity to what is here, and with the sense that what you truly are has never depended upon everything outside you falling perfectly into place. As this begins to feel more real in your own life, attention can turn from trying to arrange the outside world toward listening more closely to what has been taking place inside. This inward direction is where Your Journey Within begins.

Your Journey Within brings attention to the thoughts, emotions, beliefs, and reactions that have accompanied you through different moments of life. A reaction that appears in the present can sometimes carry the imprint of an earlier event that felt similar in some way. By looking beneath a recurring reaction, you can begin to trace where it first took shape and see how the subconscious mind may have associated that earlier experience with situations that came later. What seems to belong only to the present can then reveal a pattern that has appeared through different relationships, events, or stages of life.

Following that thread inward leads, you see what has been influencing the present from the place you are in now, with the inner resources, insight, with the inner resources, insight, and new possibilities for choice that are part of your life today. What once arose automatically can be transformed, reframed, or released when it no longer feels aligned with the life you want to live and the way you want to meet yourself, others, and what is in front of you now. This is the heart of Your Journey Within, bringing conscious attention to what has been carried forward, releasing what holds you back, returning to the present moment, opening your heart to love, and living with the freedom to choose again, return to your True Self, return to love.

Inspiration

“This original presentation of Opening Your Heart to Love draws its principal inspiration from Swami Chetanananda’s Open Heart, Open Mind: Practical Lessons in Loving Your Life, particularly his teachings on the open heart, true love, the voice of the ego, letting go, stillness, interrelatedness, happiness, and living from the state of love.
